This BAC chart explains commonly cited blood alcohol concentration ranges. It can help you understand an estimate, but it cannot predict exactly how a person will feel or determine whether anyone is safe to drive.
BAC is usually written as a percentage. A result of 0.08% means 0.08 grams of alcohol per deciliter of blood in the United States. Effects overlap, and tolerance can change what is visible without removing coordination, reaction-time, or medical risk.

Ranges are educational summaries, not diagnostic thresholds. Legal limits differ by location, age, license type, and driving category.
Start with the concentration, then read the effects as possibilities rather than promises. Alcohol affects several abilities at once: divided attention, visual tracking, decision-making, reaction time, coordination, and impulse control. A person may appear composed while still performing poorly on tasks that require fast judgment. Visible behavior is therefore not a dependable substitute for a breath or blood measurement.
The chart also does not show a single universal timeline. BAC can continue to rise after the last drink while alcohol is still being absorbed. Food often slows absorption but does not cancel the alcohol. Body water, biological sex, drinking pace, serving strength, medications, liver health, and individual variation all affect the concentration and its timing. The same number of drinks can produce different results in different people or on different occasions.
A legal threshold is not a safety threshold. In the United States, 0.08% is a common per se limit for most adult noncommercial drivers, but lower limits apply in some situations, and a driver can be impaired or charged below 0.08%. Other countries frequently use lower limits. The practical rule is simpler: if you have been drinking, arrange another way home instead of using a chart or calculator to approve driving.

A calibrated breathalyzer estimates alcohol from exhaled breath; a laboratory blood test measures alcohol in a sample. Neither should be replaced by an online estimate when medical or legal accuracy matters.
Someone with tolerance may show fewer outward signs at a given BAC. Tolerance does not restore reaction time or remove poisoning risk, and it should never be used to judge fitness to drive.
Coffee, cold showers, exercise, vomiting, and sleep do not rapidly remove alcohol already in the bloodstream. Metabolism takes time, and its rate varies from person to person.
