BAC stands for blood alcohol concentration or blood alcohol content. In the United States it is commonly expressed as grams of ethanol per deciliter of blood. A BAC of 0.08% corresponds to 0.08 grams per deciliter. The number describes concentration, not how many drinks someone consumed. Drink strength, serving size, body water, drinking pace, and elapsed time all help determine the concentration.
A widely recognized U.S. per se driving limit for most adult noncommercial drivers. It is a legal reference, not a line below which driving is guaranteed to be safe.

Call local emergency services if someone cannot be awakened, has a seizure, vomits repeatedly, breathes fewer than about eight times per minute, has long pauses between breaths, or has blue, gray, very pale, or clammy skin. Stay with the person and place them on their side if they are lying down.
Alcohol begins entering the bloodstream before a person finishes drinking, but absorption is not instantaneous. BAC may continue rising after the last sip, especially when several drinks were consumed quickly. Food in the stomach generally slows the process; it does not neutralize alcohol. Carbonated mixers, serving strength, and the rate of consumption can also affect the timing of the peak.
After absorption, the body removes alcohol mainly through metabolism. Online tools often use an average elimination rate near 0.015 BAC percentage points per hour, but actual rates vary. The change is not made faster by coffee, exercise, a shower, sleep, or vomiting. Those actions may change alertness or comfort without rapidly lowering alcohol concentration.
A per se limit lets the law use a measured concentration as evidence, but impairment can occur below that number. Lower limits may apply to drivers under 21, commercial drivers, or specific jurisdictions.
A person with tolerance may appear less affected at a given BAC, yet attention, coordination, and reaction time can still be impaired. Tolerance also does not protect against alcohol poisoning.
A calculator predicts BAC from reported drinks, weight, time, and a distribution factor. It cannot observe absorption or individual metabolism and should never be used as permission to drive.
A breathalyzer samples breath, while a laboratory test measures a blood specimen. Calibration, timing, and proper procedure matter, but these methods are fundamentally different from an input-based estimate.
